A little dissappointed

September 22nd, 2006 at 09:42 pm

Well I went to Piccadilly’s today for a lunch, I like the food and the service is great. Well I witnessed an insult today that has disturbed me and I think I am writing a letter to their headquarters. Anyway the manager came out to help the other workers serve (who were very pleasant and efficient) however when he (the manager) decided to leave he called the server "mammy" which was an insult. First of all her name is Beatrice and to say something like "Mammy I am going to leave everything up to you" it's more of an insult it's like using the "N" word at the same time trying to be discreet about. Well nonetheless the server was upset and so was I. What upset me the most was he would actually say it in front of other customers

That is an insult. Sir and Ma'am are the only acceptable ways to talk to people. If the server gives you their name then please use it! Some people are just so boorish. Employers and management should always treat workers with respect. Anything less is unacceptable!

Sometimes I just don't understand people!

Well, there was the Al Jolson song . . .

If (as I assume) we are talking about a black female employee, the remark would seem to be insensitive as recounted.

That said, it could also be an inside joke between the two of them. It's easy to assume that others are offended because we think we would be in the same circumstances. I'm not sure I'd want to complain to the corporate headquarters unless I had a full understanding of the circumstances.

    FYI Anonymous:
Yes the employee was black and I assure you she was upset. I would not complain unless I knew that for a fact and if you ask any black woman (most) would be upset as well. Furthermore, inside jokes like that are usually among people of the "same race." A lot of blacks use the "N" word amongst themselves (which I do not agree with) but once it is used by another person other than black (jokingly) it then becomes offensive, don't ask why it just does

I do not attend to direct my anger towards you, I do appreciate your point of view and I can see where some may find certain thins offensive while others may not

Wow. It's awful to think someone might be insulting to an employee because they know the employee needs the job and can't do anything about it. Or maybe they just don't think. In any case, it was mean. I can understand your feelings.

I would not hesiate to write a letter to their corporate office. As long as you felt uncomfortable in witinessing what was said it does not matter how the sever felt about it. The manager should be taught how to be professoinal in front of customers and staff.
