Strange call

April 12th, 2006 at 02:16 am

Wow you hear about identity theft but never think it can happen to you. Well today I got a call I can’t remember the name of the company anyway an automated message prompt for me to verify my name…I did and then verify my last 4 digit of my social security number of course I did not. I just keyed in some bogus numbers to see what will happen. Anyway I was directed to a rep who stated that my mortgage was coming due, mind you I don’t own a home and he needed to verify my SSN I informed him he called me he should be the one verifying the info but what scares me is that they have my name and phone number. Finally after going around in circles he read off some off the wall numbers I said to him it is obvious you have the wrong gal he seem a little upset not that I care. I am sure he just ran off some numbers I wish I had told him it was correct to see what would happen, darn!!

So be very careful

    Great message to share...

NEVER give personal information over the phone or internet unless YOU initiated the contact and YOU KNOW who you are dealing with.

Legitimate businesses won't call/email you and askfor your personal/confidential information.

    NEVER NEVER NEVER

My matching story to your was a phone call for a college loan in a state across the country, one I never was in. Out of curiosity I called - I had to know why they were calling me. Turned out there was a person with my name not paying their college loan, so they found my name and tried calling.

Actually not a bad idea on their part as my name is unique, and this person is the only other person in the country with my name (according to the online search engines), so the odds weren't bad that I could have been him. It wasn't identity theft, but still it makes you think about it.

Thanks a million. We all need to be kept on our toes about things like this. I have had numerous calls from this so called "collection agency" by the name of Asset Acceptance. I looked them up on the Internet Google search engine and found a website that lists all the names of these crooked bottom feeders. I made the horrible mistake of actually talking to them the first time they called, and ended up with them calling back many times. I finally got smart and hung up at once when I get any automated call esp. if it's from them. They finally quit calling. I'll try to find that website again;it's extremely detailed about these crooks posing as collection agencies.
