$12, 000 by December 08

December 15th, 2007 at 02:46 pm

One of my goals for '08 is to have $12,000 saved by December. That means that I would need to set aside $500 each pay period, since I get a pay check twice a month. I am just sitting here wondering if it can be done. I have also decided to cut my hours at the part-time job, even though I like the extra $460 a month I am starting to get really tired and I plan on taking 4 classes next semester, so I need atleast one day off a week...we'll see

Hopefully I will also be graduating in the fall of '08 as well and my goal is to close on my house/townhouse as a graduation present to myself

This will probably be contrary advice. But I wanted to say, are you expecting a big pay raise when you are done with school? If so, in this case, I wouldn't sweat it. Maybe you won't make it by Dec. '08, but you will make it easily enough, and quickly, when you are done with school. (As far as townhouse purchase). Or if nothing else, you can work more jobs when you no longer have school, to save up. Don't get too burned out with school. It's probably more important that you finish than save for a home!

Granted, I finished school young and had a huge raise but I didn't save a dime in school. It was more important to finish. It was important for me not to go into debt. It was far easier just to save my pay raise out of school. I saved more in one year than I could have my entire school career anyway. Sometimes I think over saving in youth is fruitless. Work towards a better paying job and then save. That's my 2 cents.

I hesitate to say it because I don't want to discourage you. Try. But if it can't be done, I wouldn't sweat it. Education is just so important, and should make the savings easier. Wink You are doing well and are so close!

When I am finish with school and if I wish to stay in my field of study I will actually be making a little less.

Once I am finish with school I plan on working two jobs, only because I want to buy a hoouse pay if off ASAP and retire early so that extra income will come in handy

However on a different, when ever I get a raise I do save it and I am expecting one in January if it is like last year it will be close to a dollar

Moneky momma, I do think you hit it right on the nose; thanks Smile

Amber: I would advise you not to burn your candle at both ends and put up too many goals at once. Your main consideration now is to finish school and not be so tired. It is really tough what you are doing now, so don't put too many burdens on yourself. It may be a good idea to poat your goals monthly as you see what you can do. Any savings is a plus at this point as you can see from monkeymamas reply to you.

Give yourself a little room for some kind of entertainment even if its not a whole lot at this point. We're all pulling for you.

Enjoy the beautiful holidays as much as you can because before you know it, 2008 will be here. Just going for a drive to see lights. I know that you live in South Fla because of your posts and school. Ft. Lauderdale has the beautiful boat parade coming up around Dec. 22nd I think. I've never seen it, but I heard it is well worth going to.

It looks like we'll both be graduating in December 2008. You're doing so well. Don't work too hard Amber, you're doing so much already! Things get so much better when you finally finish school and start earning money. You should definitely look into jobs at the DHH. I know in my state the jobs are plentiful, pay well, and are pretty secure. They are great training grounds to go on and do more as well.

    Amber--

I am 38 years old now, but on my 33rd birthday I went back to school. My boys were 12 and 9 years old at the time. My husband held 3 jobs so that I can continue going to school. I graduated from college May of 2006 with a BA in Spanish and a minor in Secondary Education. After graduation I was hired to teach high school Spanish and our income increased $43,000.

I am so proud that you are in school trying to improve your life. Your degree is something noone can take from you. Keep up the good job and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. You go girl!!!

I am very happy for you. You did it with two small children and your husband sacrificed as well, what an accomplishment
