I'll take you to lunch...not

So I usually pack my lunch because one, I can't afford to eat out every day, two I like my quiet time to read up on a few HR things and Bible study, three it's expensive to eat out.

So my boss comes and says the team is going out to lunch and she'd like to take me out for my birthday. I declined respectfully and explained that I had already plugged in my crockpot lunchbox. She insists and so does other teammates, so I say okay. We get there order, and the waitress comes and ask if the checks are separate. My boss who was taking me out to lunch says yes.

😡 Now I'm annoyed. First you said you wanted to take me out, second I had already packed my lunch and two we spent our lunch wolfing down our food because you're in a hurry, not to mention she didn't eat any of her food and complained the entire time. Ugh
Lunch was $14 but I added $5 for a tip costing me $19. And because I had not budgeted and any time I do this I pay the same amount on my CC. Ugh. $40 I really didn't want to spend and it was rude.
Twice this week I've been bamboolzed and it won't happen again.
Next time I pack my lunch, I'll be eating my lunch.

    I would have called her on it, boss or not. "You said you were taking me to lunch." If she didn't then cover it, I would have said, "Sorry, I can't afford it," and if you couldn't leave just ordered water and ate when I got back to work. Then any time in the future if she says that again you say, "I don't have the money for that." Then she'll either flat out say she will pay or should back off.

    She sounds like the type of boss who will make a fuss about your birthday and expect you to reciprocate by taking her to a birthday lunch at an upscale restaurant and for sure pay the bill. I've meet a few 'entitlement dolls' and wondered how they got their job of authority. Apparently she says whatever is expedient to get the result she want. I hope you tread carefully, not discussing boss's foibles with colleagues.

    SNAFU you hit her dead on the nail. Wednesday the girls got me cupcakes and she was visibly upset. Can't figure out how I always find these jobs with crazy bosses

    I'm so sorry that happened to you. I would have expected her wanting to take you out meant she was paying! At least you leaned and it won't happen again. Maybe next time they can order pizza in and you can all eat together in the office to celebrate. Smile

    That truly stinks. I'm so sorry, but don't blame yourself. Normally when someone says they want to take you out, it means they will be paying for the meal. Some folks, like your boss, lack class. Perhaps a suggestion of a monthly potluck for those celebrating birthdays that month. One of the schools I worked at did that. There is never time to go out during the school day, so each month there would be a potluck to celebrate the people's birthdays that month. You could either choose to bring something or not, but at least people felt their birthdays were observed and no one was pressured to go out and spend money they didn't want to.

    That is terrible!! I can't believe it. How rude and tacky to make you pay. And I can't believe that never during that meal or during payment she didn't pick up your tab. Some people are really thoughtless.

    First, happy belated birthday. And how rude (pretty much unimaginable) to say that s/he was taking you out and then making you pay.
