No Dining Out

August 8th, 2023 at 03:08 am

Though eating out appears to be less expensive, in some cases, than eating in, I have managed to eat at home since August has started.

I'm hoping to reduce my food bill this month. I shopped yesterday at Trader Joe's, which is far less than our local grocery store.

Things have gotten so expensive. It's times like these that I really miss my dad, he grew all sorts of fruits and vegetables, I don't have a yard to do so. I think I'm going to look into a raised garden.

I guess maybe it depends on where you eat you, but please keep in mind that when you eat out, you are basically paying for your one meal and probably some kind of drink. You are paying not only for the food itself, but also the labor to cook and serve it. That amount is substantially higher than if you cook the same meal at home. Also, you could cook something like a roast at home that could make a week's worth of meals, where you basically recycle your roast beef into tacos, stew, stir fry, etc. by adding some fresh or frozen vegetables and seasonings. Also, if you have any health issues, like high blood pressure, for example, food eaten in restaurants is often higher in sodium.

My dad was also an avid gardener, and we always had such delicious fresh veggies all summer long when I was a kid. Be careful of the cost of raised bed and container gardening, it can get pricey to start-up. Maybe check FB marketplace or neighborhood freecycle if you have those for anyone giving away those types of supplies to get you started.

Do you have an Aldi’s or an expanded Dollar store near you? Their prices are better than supermarket.
Also check Walmart and Target online if you don’t have one nearby.
And check your local supermarket ads on line and buy what is on sale. Many have free pickup so you don’t need to spend time - or be tempted by treats! And once you do it for a few months, you get the sense of the store sale cycle and how fast you use things up so you can make the system work for you.

With some planning, eating at home should be cheaper than eating out - and much healthier too.
And money you don’t spend can be worth the time it takes to save it because it is β€˜tax free.’

Eating out is more expensive. I too also buy premade foods, my weakness is costco. But then I give myself a break and say well going out to eat ravioli is 3x what it costs me to buy it premade. Or buy premade X, Y, Z. It really in a pinch helps keep from eating out. I'm nots sure it's healthier than eating out but it is for sure cheaper.
