Student Loan Payment

August 13th, 2025 at 07:55 am

My bonus is scheduled to hit on Friday. I transferred $500 from a savings account and paid towards my student loan, trying to beat the interest game. It annoys me that it takes Nelnet days to process my payment while I’m incurring interest and yet no time for them to tack on their daily interest.

This was about a $33k-$35k student loan (2013) which had balloon to almost $90k in 2020, never missed a payment but due to my income I was on the IDR plan. 7 years and my loan went up about $55 that is a 157.14% increase. Absolutely insane.

My balance is about 22k. What helped my COVID, the pause in interest made a huge difference, I kept paying. I was able to pay off two loans and consolidate two more. Prayerfully I’ll be done by next year. I’ve taken on a second job adding about $400 more in payments.

Side note. Honest to God these pop ups are the worst. I don't know when this all started but it's absolutely INSANE! My God

How much interest do you guys pay? I just paid off my student loan and we are indexed once a year on june 1st, my last current year on just over $27k was approx $1200 for the year. Our govt has just agreed to take 20% off of student loans. So I will save about $5k off of it.

So glad that you are getting it down and hopefully paid off next year...what is your plan after is is paid off? I can't imagine my loan going up that high...that is just ridiculous.

I completely agree with with the ads...so annoying

I love seeing your progress Amber. Your discipline is fine-tuned these days - I think you're unstoppable now.

I stopped using my phone to access this site because of the ads. They're obnoxious. That means I don't check in as often since I don't use the computer every day but at least it's a pleasant experience when I do.

Way to go, Amber! It's been exciting to watch you as you progress.

I agree, the ads are a pain!

The pop up ad I got on your post was โ€˜apply for a student loan.โ€™ ๐Ÿคฎ

What the US government did to student loan borrowers was/is horrendous.
People say โ€˜pay back what you borrowโ€™ with no understanding that income based payments made the payback amount multiple times the original loan amount - and loan servicers buried the information so people had no idea they were getting buried in debt.

And there is no compassion in the current administration.
If anything, they chortle with glee when others suffer.
Iโ€™m glad you are near the end of digging yourself out.

Congrats on your handling of your student loans!

What is this about pop-up ads? Is it from SavingAdvice web site? I use ad blockers, and I didn't even know there were any....

@Tabs when you access the site from your phone you are bombarded with ads, itโ€™s unbearable.

@LifeBalance thanks for the tip, Iโ€™ll start accessing from my laptop.
