Bonus = Student Loan

December 10th, 2025 at 01:18 pm

Thank you to everyone who has  been on this journey with me, you know how difficult it's been, how long it's been and I'm just so excited to share with you.

My bonus hit my account today and I paid $2000 (all of it) on my student loans . Once the payment post which will probably be either be Friday or Monday, my new balance will be just over $12,000. I'm hoping that with my first job, my full-time job, that I get a bonus. If I do, I'm throwing it all at the student loans as well.

I would love to have these loans done by March. However, I think that realistically it will be done by June. Once I submit that final payment, no matter where you're at, if you hear a scream, a cry, a yell, know that is me, lol.

I'll up update my sidebar once the payment hits.

Next after the student loan is paid off, I'll throw it at the new car and get that done by the end of the following  year (2027).

Yes, I bought a new car. My car had hit 300,000 miles and I started putting way too much money in it. I just hate that I did not save money for a vehicle and that I was throwing it all at the student loan but then another part of me was like, yes that is the right thing to do, pay your student loans. I was close to 100k prior to the pandemic, and opted to take full advantage of the no interest period.

That's awesome about the student loans! How long have you been paying on them?

Congrats on the new car! 300,000 miles is a lot of driving. You definitely got your money's worth out of that car.

@Terri I’ve been paying since 2013. Never missed a payment. I borrowed $35k but because I could not afford my monthly payments, I had to sign up for the income driven plan. That loan went from $35k to almost $100k. Yes I borrowed the money, yes I should pay it back, and I do the believe that the bank deserves to make money (interest); however not at the time of almost 15 years and an additional $60k that’s 2x as much as I borrowed. It’s shameful what happens with these student loans.

Sorry I didn’t mean to go off the rails.

    My Camry is a 2002

Amber it was you sharing your student loan story that made me realize the depravity of a government sponsored program that takes advantage of people before they have a chance to be financially literate. I am so happy you are almost out from under this burden - so many people will never be unless society/government change in the long term.

You made the right decision to replace your car. Once you reach a certain point, the cost of unexpected repairs and the danger of a breakdown outweigh everything else and you were there.

Hoping 2026 is chock full of good things for you!

That is amazing seems to have come down real quick...probably not to you but almost there then pay off your car and then you will have so much money to be able to do other things...congrats so happy for you

    That's wonderful, Amber! Well done!

I would second that you did fine as far as getting a new car. You'll pay it off early once you get your student loans vanquished!

Congratulations and great progress! I agree, better to get a new car than keep paying once you have 300,000 miles on a vehicle (amazing!) At least that loan will be far quicker to pay off!

what happened to you will happen more now that there is a "limit" on professional borrowing. Only private borrowing.
