Update

February 8th, 2026 at 08:09 am

Things are really getting bad. I bought three apples for $8—ridiculous. I honestly don’t know how people are going to make it.

In other news, my $510 student loan payment hit, the balance is just over $8k. I also received a notification that I’ll be getting a bonus this week. I’m thankful, but also frustrated, because it’s all going towards my student loan. I’m anticipating a $1,200 payment this week. This will put me just under 7k.

I'm trying to find ways to cut my expenses. I haven’t been to the salon for the last three weeks. The hair salon is my treat to myself; however, I’ve been practicing doing my own hair, it's been tough but I'm trying.  My ex stopped by and asked if I’d been to the salon, and that actually made me feel good. It meant I’m getting better.

I know right?! Prices are already insane, and things are projected to get worse. I can easily go into a tirade about the Trump economy, but I am doing my best to keep politics out of it if it can be helped.

Wow! I haven't seen prices like that here but I don't shop at the more expensive grocery stores. Keep up the good work on paying off your student loan!

we shop at local fruit/veg stores and markets..so much cheaper but prices are going up..everything else is but wages. Congrats on bringing it down so much it will be gone before you know it...do you have a plan of what you will do with all the money after you have paid it off...Have you ever just thought of using your baby step 1 to pay it off and save on interest and then replace the money with what you were putting on student loans?

Mumof2 - yes I have been seriously thinking about it. My fear is the highs and lows of the job market. If I take the money and pay off and I’m laid off I can’t pay my other bills. This is my biggest fear. I’m thinking once I get the balance to about $5k I could take half

I hear you Amber. We like radishes. Yes, I know they are technically out of season, but we like them. We bought a bunch at Walmart last week. They not only went up a nickel, but there was half of the amount from the previous week. A nickel here, a dime there, a dollar ... it all adds up. I've been trying to shop for things that are on sale and I have coupons for so I have a little stockpile until the next time things go on sale, but as far as fresh fruits and veggies, we are at the mercy of the stores. I don't usually buy a ton of stuff out of season. And when I can, I try to hit Aldi, but the closest Aldi is 40 minutes away so it had to be a time we are doing things near there.

I'm sure you are doing a fine job with your hair; I think we are our own worst critics.
